Frequently Asked Questions
1. What kinds of wood species do you carry?
We carry a wide variety of locally-grown Hawaiian hardwoods, including such species as koa, lychee, mango, monkeypod, coconut, and more. Whether you’re turning bowls, crafting furniture, or working on a specialty project, we have figured hardwoods of many types for you.
2. Where are you located, and can I visit your showroom?
Yes – we have a showroom you can visit. Our address is 67-1140 Lindsey Rd., Kamuela, HI 96743 (just south of the Kahilu Theater, behind Mana Christian Ohana). Our regular hours are Monday–Friday 9 AM-4 PM, Saturday 9 AM-3 PM, and we’re closed Sunday.
3. Do you reclaim or only source freshly cut timber?
We specialize in reclaiming, recovering and salvaging wood that would otherwise have been burned, chipped or land-filled. We also freshly cut and dried pieces for bowl blanks and other applications, giving new life to locally-grown hardwoods.
4. What sizes or formats do you offer?
For bowl-turning enthusiasts, we offer a variety of sizes and species of bowl blanks. We also offer larger slabs, beams, and dimensional hardwoods for furniture, cabinetry or specialty work.
5. How does shipping or pickup work?
You can place orders via our online store and choose shipping or arrange pickup at our showroom. (If you prefer to browse in person, please check availability in advance.)
6. Is the wood kiln-dried or air-dried?
Many of our blanks and slabs are freshly cut and dried, specifically for turning and fine woodworking. Please contact us for specific moisture content details for your project.
7. Do you offer milling or custom cuts?
Yes — in addition to standard slab and blank sizes, we offer custom milling and cutting services to meet your project specifications. Feel free to reach out with your requirements.
8. How sustainable is your operation?
Sustainability is central to our work. We aim to not unnecessarily remove trees for the sake of harvesting; rather we reclaim, rescue, and repurpose wood from local sources. This approach helps reduce waste and gives fallen or felled trees a second life.
9. Can I reserve rare or highly figured pieces?
Absolutely. If you’re looking for a particular figure, size or species, let us know — we can set something aside for you and notify you when it becomes available.
10. What payment methods and terms do you accept?
We accept major credit cards via our online store, and can accommodate in-person purchases at our showroom. For large custom jobs we may discuss terms or deposits — please contact us to discuss.
11. Do you offer recommendations for working with figured woods?
Yes — we’re happy to share guidance. Figured hardwoods can behave differently (grain direction changes, tear-out potential, etc.). Be sure to use sharp tools, slow feed rates, and take light cuts when necessary. We’re always here to help if you have questions about your project.
12. Who can I contact for questions or to schedule a visit?
You can reach us via email at info@kamuelahardwoods.com or by phone at (808) 731-9924. We’re happy to be of assistance and look forward to helping you select the perfect hardwood for your next creation.
